What is a Duvet Cover?

A duvet cover may be something you’ve heard mentioned before, or have seen on a website or in a bed and bath catalog. But you may be wondering what duvet covers really are and why everyone seems to be using them. Are they a blanket? A comforter? Something else? What exactly is a duvet cover and how is it used?

What s a Duvet Cover?

First, let’s look at what a duvet actually is.

A duvet is a type of bed covering that is designed to make the process of making a bed more simple. It’s similar to a comforter, but there are distinct differences between the two. A duvet is more like a sleeping bag instead of a comforter, and is designed to be used alone on top of the bed. Instead of making a bed with sheets and blankets, you would simply put the duvet cover the bed, on top of the fitted sheet. This type of bed covering is the most common in Northern Europe, but has become popular all over the world since the late 20th century.

Which brings us to what a duvet cover is.

Simply put, a duvet cover is like a pillowcase for your duvet, or comforter.

Since thick duvets are difficult to laundry because of their large size and delicate fillings – such as feathers – it makes much more sense to just place a cover over it that can be removed with the remaining bed sheets and pillowcases. Some duvet covers are purely decorative, while others have more practical use and can be easily laundered and replaced.

Decorative duvet covers are an excellent choice for bedrooms or guest rooms that you want to have a bold, vibrant look. An ornamental duvet cover can be removed before using the duvet, and can be dry cleaned on occasion, along with your other dry clean only items.

Banarsi Designs offers a wide variety of gorgeous, hand painted and hand embroidered duvet covers that will add class, style, and luxury to any bedroom or guest room.
